Do ribbon microphones need a special preamp?
Passive ribbons benefit from a preamp with plenty of clean gain and no phantom power accidentally engaged — phantom power can damage some vintage passive ribbons. Active ribbons like the AEA NUVO series are more forgiving.
What makes ribbon mics sound different from condensers?
A naturally smooth high-frequency rolloff and a figure-eight polar pattern that picks up front and back equally — the result reads as warmer and less harsh, especially on bright sources.
Are ribbon microphones fragile?
