Studio Equalizers – Which One for Mixing and Mastering
An equalizer shapes tone by boosting or cutting specific frequencies — and a hardware EQ prints that decision into the signal at tracking or mix time, instead of leaving it as an undo-able plugin move. This collection covers passive, active and digitally-controlled equalizers for tracking, mixing and mastering.
Passive, active or digitally controlled
A passive EQ, in the classic Pultec style, can only cut what it boosts on a different frequency — that interaction is exactly what gives it its character on vocals and bass. An active EQ is more surgical and predictable for corrective work. Digitally-controlled hybrids like Black Box Analog Design HG-Q keep the signal path analog while letting you recall and automate settings.
Where to start
For classic top-and-bottom boost character on vocals and bass, Pultec EQP-500X is the reference. Want a full-bandwidth mastering EQ instead? Mercury EQ-P1 MKIV gives you passive-style musicality across the whole spectrum.
The brands we carry

Hear it in our Warsaw showroom
The biggest difference between us and a mail-order shop: you can hear the gear before you buy it. Our showroom at Nowogrodzka 6A/102 in Warsaw is there so you can try it on your own material, not a shop demo. Book a visit or just swing by — we'll help without the sales pitch. Call: +48 573 580 840.
FAQ
Hardware EQ or a plugin?
A plugin is enough for corrective work. Hardware is bought for the character a specific circuit adds — Pultec-style boost/cut interaction, or transformer coloration that a plugin only approximates.
What's special about a Pultec-style EQ?
Boosting and cutting the same frequency band at once produces a broad, musical bump instead of a narrow notch — that interaction is the whole reason the circuit is still copied today.
EQ before or after compression?
Both orders work and are used deliberately. EQ first to fix problems before they get compressed; EQ after to shape the tone the compressor already settled.
