Say „DiGiGrid" and you think of hundreds of Waves plugins running live, simultaneously, with latency too small for anyone to notice. This isn't a classic hardware maker with a single founder's story — DiGiGrid is the product of a partnership between two industry giants: the Israeli company Waves Audio, founded in October 1992 by Gilad Keren (a recording engineer for major Israeli artists) and Meir Shaashua (a musician and physicist who met Keren at a recording studio back in 1982), and the British digital-console manufacturer DiGiCo, formed in 2002 out of the acquisition of Soundtracs. Waves debuted the world's first-ever audio signal-processor plugin — the Q10 Paragraphic equalizer — opening up an entire product category that's now a standard fixture in every DAW.
The two companies' collaboration dates back to 2009, when Waves needed a live-sound partner for its new SoundGrid networking technology, and DiGiCo was the natural choice given the thousands of digital consoles already running the protocol. A few years later, in 2012–2013, the DiGiGrid brand was born — a line of audio interfaces connecting Pro Tools users, native DAWs, and MADI-enabled devices to the SoundGrid network, in both the studio and live settings. At the heart of the system is a Linux-based DSP server running on Intel processors, capable of processing hundreds of Waves plugins in real time at sub-millisecond latency — without loading down the host computer at all.
