Vertigo Sound VSE-2 Gyrator Equalizer is a three band dual mono equaliser with eighteen selectable frequencies per channel. The band is set by a discrete gyrator circuit, while cut and boost run through a discrete operational amplifier, the same one used in the VSP-2 preamp.

Variable Q that looks after itself

Push a wide boost on an ordinary equaliser and it drags the neighbouring bands with it until the mix turns cloudy. On the VSE-2 the Q tracks the amount of correction: the harder you boost or cut, the narrower the band becomes. In practice a full +8 dB stays focused around the selected centre frequency instead of spilling into the bottom and the top. Cut and boost are stepped at ±1 dB, ±2 dB, ±3.5 dB, ±5.5 dB and ±8 dB, so every setting can be written down and recalled step for step.

Dual mono, which means MS ready

Both channels carry fully independent frequency and gain switches, so the VSE-2 drops straight into an MS insert with no modification. You can lift the low end in the centre while pulling it out of the sides, and treat the top the other way round. A.I.R. mode sets the gyrator to work at the threshold of hearing and extends the top end without adding presence or harshness, which pays off on cymbals and finished mixes. The high pass filter sweeps from 10 Hz to 400 Hz, works independently of the EQ section and bypasses completely when it is not needed.

KEY FEATURES

  • Stepped cut and boost: ±1, ±2, ±3.5, ±5.5 and ±8 dB
  • A.I.R. mode extending the top end without harshness
  • High pass filter sweepable from 10 Hz to 400 Hz
  • EQ section and filter usable independently or together
  • Hardwire bypass when switched off or on power loss
  • Clip LED triggering at +22 dBu at the output
