Neumann U 87 Ai — a multi-pattern condenser microphone with a dual-diaphragm capsule, in continuous production since 1967 and regarded as the reference microphone in studios worldwide. Three switchable polar patterns, a low-cut filter, and a -10dB pad make it one of the most versatile studio mics available.

The dual-diaphragm capsule, built from two capsules mounted back to back, allows switching between cardioid, omnidirectional, and figure-8 without swapping capsules — unusual at this quality level, where multi-pattern designs typically compromise on at least one mode. The U 87 Ai stands out for sounding equally good across all three patterns, with a similar frequency response throughout, rather than having one clearly weaker mode as is common in cheaper multi-pattern mics.

One microphone for vocals, room, and a stereo pair

An engineer building a mic locker from scratch often has to source separate models for vocals, room miking, and stereo technique. The U 87 Ai's cardioid pattern works as a primary vocal and voice mic, omni mode handles ambience or string-section recording well, and the figure-8 pattern serves as a side mic in mid/side technique or as an alternative to a ribbon mic on vocals, with less proximity bass buildup than a classic ribbon.

Working at loud sources without raising the noise floor

The -10dB pad lets the mic handle sources up to 127dB SPL without distortion, making it useful on drum overheads or brass as well — applications outside the typical vocal mic use case. The low-cut filter compensates for proximity effect on close-miked sources, and low self-noise keeps the signal clean even on quieter sources.
