Mercury M72s MKIV is a two-channel tube microphone preamplifier built around the Telefunken/Siemens V72s module circuit — the amplifiers that stood in German broadcast houses and recording studios through the fifties and sixties. Mercury rebuilds that topology and adds what the original never had: DI, pad and phantom power.

Character you cannot add with a plugin

The V72 is not transparent and was never meant to be. Tube gain through a transformer gives a dense midrange and a soft rounding of peaks — the layer people later try to recreate with saturation, usually without success. On vocals and on snare you hear it from the first take, because it happens while tracking rather than afterwards.

Two channels is the minimum, not a luxury

Two paths let you track a pair of overheads, a stereo piano, or vocal and guitar at once with the same character. The DI input runs bass and guitar through the same tube stage, and the pad prepares the preamp for loud sources that would defeat a sensitive condenser on another chain.
