Fostex EX-EP-61 are OEM replacement ear pads for the TH610 and TH616 — closed-back dynamic headphones in the TH series, positioned between the TH600 and the flagship TH900mk2. Each pad uses low-rebound foam wrapped in high-grade artificial leather, matching the factory specification in both material and geometry. Fostex describes the EX-EP-61 as combining soft low-resilience cushioning with high-grade leatherette for a comfortable fit and effective sound isolation — the two properties that degrade fastest with regular use.

Why pad wear matters on a closed-back dynamic

The TH610 and TH616 are sealed designs: the acoustic chamber formed between the cup and the ear directly governs bass extension, external isolation, and stereo image stability. As the stock foam loses resilience over time, the pad-to-head contact becomes uneven, the chamber volume changes, and the low-frequency seal deteriorates gradually — often without the user noticing until a comparison with fresh pads makes it obvious. EX-EP-61 restores the original chamber geometry and with it the driver's intended frequency response. Aftermarket pads in different materials or profiles change this balance unpredictably; OEM pads do not.

Installation and long-term durability

Replacement is tool-free and follows the same stretch-and-clip system used across the EX-EP accessory line: pull the worn pad off the cup rim, stretch the rear flap of the new pad over the housing edge and press into place. The process takes under a minute per side. High-grade leatherette resists abrasion better than economy synthetic materials and degrades more slowly under moisture exposure — a relevant factor for headphones used during extended sessions.
