Erica Synths Razornator

Erica Synths Razornator is a stereo effects unit built around five chromatically tuned resonating delay lines, with an algorithm developed together with the Dutch company 112dB. It does not add reverb or modulation; it alters the harmonic content of the incoming signal, emulating the resonance of physical objects such as instrument bodies, rooms and structures.

Resonance that tunes to the track

The usual problem with resonators and comb filter effects is that their peaks land at pitches unrelated to the key of the material, so the effect turns sour quickly and ends up usable only on experimental sounds. The Razornator uses chromatic tuning, so the five delay lines can be aligned in chord-like intervals and work inside the key of the track. The same processor therefore covers both a subtle thickening of a drum loop and a full rebuild of a sound into a drone.

Dynamics instead of a static filter

A built-in envelope follower can take over the resonators, so the effect tracks input dynamics rather than settling into fixed colouration. The signal path is laid out as a chain of considered stages: a gain stage boosting up to plus 24 dB that also works as an overdrive, a lowpass filter with resonance, the five resonators, a compressor limiting the summed signal, a dry blend, an equaliser and a balanced output. All 12 parameters can be saved and recalled, presets can be morphed, every parameter responds to MIDI, and a configurable footswitch input allows hands-free changes on stage.
