Fostex T60RP is a semi-open planar magnetic headphone built around the third-generation RP driver in a solid African mahogany housing. Introduced in 2017–2018, it was the first headphone in the T-RP line to use a wood enclosure and served for years as the series reference — both in studio monitoring and audiophile listening contexts. Its successor, the T60RPmk2, replaced the third-generation RP driver with the fourth generation and changed the housing material to black walnut, while retaining the semi-open geometry and the overall sound philosophy.
Third-generation RP driver and mahogany — the acoustic combination
The T60RP's driver is built on a polyimide film diaphragm with copper foil etching, driven by neodymium magnets in a Regular Phase arrangement — full-surface drive ensures uniform phase across the entire membrane, resulting in low phase distortion and the fast transient response characteristic of planar technology. At 50 Ω and 92 dB/mW sensitivity, the T60RP has a practical requirement for a dedicated headphone amplifier — connecting directly to a laptop or smartphone headphone output will not yield adequate volume or dynamic performance. African mahogany as an enclosure material provides natural resonance damping while contributing a warm coloration in the lower midrange and upper bass, distinguishing the T60RP from the more analytically neutral plastic-housed models in the same RP lineup.Connector system and cabling
The first-generation T60RP uses a dedicated 4-pole 3.5 mm socket in the left earcup — a topologically different system from the dual independent 3.5 mm TS Y-cable sockets adopted on the T60RPmk2 and T60RPmk2CL. Cables designed for the mk2 generation, including ET-RP4.4BL2Y, do not fit the original T60RP directly. The T60RP's dedicated optional cables were the ET-RP4.4BL (4.4 mm balanced, 1.5 m) and ET-RP3.5UB (3.5 mm unbalanced). Stock low-rebound ear pads suit long sessions; the OEM replacement set EX-EP-RP60 restores the factory acoustic seal when the originals wear out.KEY FEATURES
