Passive, active or room-correction
A passive controller adds no electronics to the path — simplest and cheapest option. Active designs add a headphone amp and extra inputs, like Heritage Audio BABY RAM. When you actually need one
If you have one pair of monitors and an interface with a volume knob, a controller won't change much. It earns its place when you're comparing two pairs of monitors, switching between several sources — computer, turntable, console — or want physical mute and dim at hand. In networked installs, that role shifts to Dante devices like Focusrite RedNet R1.

Do I need a monitor controller with just one pair of speakers?
Usually not, if your interface already has a reliable volume knob. It becomes worth it once you're switching between sources or monitor pairs regularly.
What does room correction actually fix?
It measures how your specific room reinforces or cancels certain frequencies, then applies correction so what you hear is closer to the actual mix — not a substitute for treating the room, but a real help on top of it.
Passive or active monitor controller?
Passive if you only need level control and source switching. Active if you also want a headphone amp and more inputs than a passive box can offer.
