Direct-drive, without exception — it's the only type with the torque and instant start-up that scratching and beatmatching require.
How do I know if I just need a new stylus?
If the sound is thin, distorted, or skips on records that used to play fine, check the stylus before anything else — it's the cheapest fix and the most common cause of degraded vinyl sound.
Does turntable quality really matter for casual listening?
Less than for DJ use, but a poor turntable adds audible wow, flutter and rumble even to casual listening. A decent belt-drive deck closes most of that gap affordably.
