Analog, digital or hybrid
An analog synth generates sound with real analog circuitry — the sound most people mean by "warm" and "fat." A digital synth like Elektron Digitone II uses FM and other digital synthesis methods for sounds analog circuits can't easily produce — bells, metallic tones, complex evolving textures. Hybrid designs combine an analog signal path with digital control and modulation, getting the character of analog with the recall and precision of digital.

Analog or digital synth for a first instrument?
Analog if you want an immediate, hands-on feel and a classic character. Digital if you want sounds analog circuits can't easily make, and the ability to save and recall patches instantly.
Do I need a modular system, or is a regular synth enough?
A regular synth covers most needs. Modular is for when you want to design the signal path yourself, not just the sound within a fixed one — it's a different hobby as much as a different instrument.
What's the difference between a synthesizer and a sampler?
A synthesizer generates sound from oscillators and filters. A sampler plays back and manipulates recorded audio. See our Samplers category if that's what you're after.
