Fostex T50RPmk3 is the third generation of the T50RP — semi-open monitoring headphones built on a polyimide film diaphragm with copper foil etching and neodymium magnets. The mk3 debuted in 2015 as the successor to the mk2, introducing a redesigned diaphragm with improved damping, new low-rebound ear pads, and an updated headband. The same driver generation ran for nearly 10 years, becoming one of the most widely modified headphone platforms in planar magnetic history — its successor, the T50RPmk4, only delivered a genuinely new driver in 2024.
Third-generation RP driver — monitoring characteristics
At 50 Ω and 92 dB/mW (1 kHz, 1 mW), the mk3 has significantly higher drive requirements than the T50RPmk4 (28 Ω / 97 dB/mW). A dedicated headphone amplifier is a practical requirement for professional monitoring work — the mk3 will not reach adequate SPL from a laptop headphone output or low-voltage audio interface. The mk3's flat frequency response neither flatters nor deceives: bass is accurate without colouration, the midrange is neutral, and the improved diaphragm damping relative to the mk2 reduced the characteristic dip around 4 kHz. Cable entry is left-cup only, via a proprietary locking 3.5 mm TRS socket — a fundamental wiring difference from the mk4, which has symmetrical sockets on both sides.T50RPmk3 as a modification platform
No headphone series has been modified as extensively as the T50RPmk3. A decade of community documentation — from simple pad swaps through damping modifications and acoustic tuning to full driver rebuilds — made the mk3 a reference point for the DIY audiophile community. The stock sound is neutral and monitoring-accurate, but requires amplification. Ear pad modifications (ZMF Ori, Dekoni Blue, and others) shift the bass profile and soundstage in predictable, well-documented ways. OEM replacement pads EX-EP-RPmk3 restore the factory acoustic profile when the originals wear out. The mk4 with its new driver is substantially more difficult to accidentally degrade through modification, but also less amenable to the deep acoustic tuning that relied on the mk3's low stock sensitivity as a starting point.KEY FEATURES
