Dangerous Music MONITOR-SR — an expansion module that turns the MONITOR-ST into a full surround monitoring system, designed by Chris Muth for studios working in 5.1, 7.1, 10.2, and object-based formats.

MONITOR-SR is a 1U unit that doesn't operate on its own — it requires a MONITOR-ST as the system core and extends its input and speaker switching with additional channels. The two units communicate through a pair of included ribbon cables on D-sub connectors, and the whole system is still driven by the same MONITOR-ST remote over a single Cat-5 cable.

Scaling into surround without recabling the room

The upgrade path is built so nothing goes obsolete: start in stereo on the ST alone, and when a project calls for it, add the SR and get full 5.1 immediately. Four analog inputs arrive on 25-pin D-sub connectors, as do three sets of speaker outputs — the first two (Main and Alt 1) carry a complete 5.1 array, while the third (Alt 2) is limited to a front stereo pair with no built-in downmix. A dedicated subwoofer output with its own crossover filter rounds out the array, and each additional SR unit in the chain lets monitoring scale further, up to 7.1, 10.2, or object-based configurations, without adding separate control wiring.

Calibration and level matching across channels

Programmable level offsets let you balance the surround, center, and LFE channels precisely against the main stereo pair, and gain tracking accuracy better than 0.05dB across six channels has a direct effect on imaging stability once you're working in surround. LFE is routed automatically to both the LFE output and the subwoofer outputs the moment a surround source is selected, so there's no manual repatching of the sub when switching between stereo and 5.1. A dedicated, buffered output feeds an external multichannel metering array without extra patching, and the built-in headphone amplifier along with talkback, solo, dim, mute, and mono functions on the ST remote behave identically to the stereo configuration.
