With the M, Waldorf catapults its perennial classic Microwave 1 into the modern era and thus to the pinnacle of wavetable synthesisers. The 1989 original was inspired by the PPG Wave synthesisers of the time and was a real novelty as a compact rack unit with two digital oscillators and an analogue filter. The deep blue synth features up-to-date, powerful Hardware and can even read SysEx files from the 30+ year old first Microwave. In the same chassis as the Kyra and Iridium, the M presents itself as very structured and neat. The most important functions can be found directly on the surface, everything else can be reached in a few steps via dedicated buttons and a large Display page. This makes going through the control matrix a thing of the past. At the same time, the 'M' looks to the future and the past and already has a well-deserved place in the present.
Each of the eight voices of the 'M' has two wavetable oscillators, each drawing from its own pool of 96 in the avetable. A further 32 user wavetables can be integrated by the user. Hardsync is switchable between tone generators, and the palette of sounds is greatly expanded by the ring modulator and noise generator. The carefully constructed and (if required) modulated sound spectrum leads to a 24dB analogue lowpass filter with the SSI 2144 chip, which is also known as the Curtis filter and fulfilled its purpose already in the first Microwave. The end of the signal path is marked by an analogue stereo VCA with panning. Two ADSR envelopes are permanently assigned to the filter and the VCA. A lush envelope consisting of eight timing elements and eight level elements is used specifically to modulate the Wavetables. The fourth envelope is freely assignable and offers eight time and level elements. The modulation possibilities are rounded off by two BPM-synchronised LFOs, as well as various controllers such as the modulation wheel, Velocity or aftertouch, which can be assigned at will.
Since the 'M' is quadruple multitimbral, you can play four sounds on different MIDI channels polyphonically at the same time, depending on the available voices
.
The four aux outputs can be used stereo via an insert cable. For combinations with four sounds, 128 multi-programs are available in addition to 2048 memory locations for individual sounds. Each sound also has
a programmable arpeggiator and chord mode.
