Oddment ODD-1 is a desktop granular synthesizer and effects processor with two fully independent layers, built by Oddment Audio in Traverse City, Michigan. Available for pre-order at $999 USD, with shipping planned from August 2026. Development is in its final stages — first beta units are already with testers.
Microsonic engine and Time Path — granular processing without speed compromises
At the core of the ODD-1 is the proprietary Microsonic engine, optimized for a quad-core 64-bit ARM A72 processor with 1 GB RAM. The engine handles up to eight simultaneous stereo samples (each up to 60 seconds at 48 kHz) with eight independent playheads — four per layer. The key difference from conventional granular instruments is the Time Path, which fully separates pitch control from time control, allowing material to be stretched, reversed, and frozen without pitch artifacts. Each grain passes through a per-voice binaural spatializer and a resonant bandpass filter — spatial depth that standard stereo panning cannot produce. Grain parameters include size, spacing, envelope shape, and stereo placement. A built-in clipper, bit crusher, compressor, delay, reverb, and distortion form a complete effects chain inside the instrument without any external processor.Modulation matrix and external gear integration
Every parameter on the ODD-1 is simultaneously a modulation destination. Sources number more than sixteen: three ADSR envelopes, four multi-wave LFOs, four macros, four CV inputs (0–5V, compatible with Eurorack, expression pedals, and sustain pedals), plus velocity, polyphonic aftertouch, pitch bend, mod wheel, and MIDI CC with CC learning. Modulation assignment works by holding any encoder and selecting a source on the touchscreen — no menu navigation required. The interface is 18 infinite encoders with integrated switches and LED rings combined with a 2.8" capacitive touchscreen showing real-time grain process visualizations and modulation plots. 4 GB of user storage (3+ GB available for samples and patches) plus a 2 GB factory library shipped with the instrument. Full performance recording directly to the device. Connectivity: MIDI 2.0 via TRS and USB-C, MPE, USB audio in/out, and routing external signals through ODD-1 as an effects processor. A companion ODD-1V plugin with the identical engine is available for Mac and Windows.KEY FEATURES
