Mercury M76m MKIV is a two-channel tube microphone preamplifier based on the Telefunken/Siemens V76m module circuit. In German studios the V76 handled the harder jobs the V72 could not: it offered more gain in reserve and real control over the path, rather than a single fixed stage.
The gain reserve a ribbon and a dynamic actually need
A ribbon microphone or a quiet dynamic can eat the entire reserve of an average preamp before the signal reaches working level — and what you hear after that is the amplifier's noise, not the instrument. The V76 circuit was designed for exactly these sources, so high gain stays clean and keeps the character of the tube path.
Impedance changes a microphone more than people expect
Switchable input impedance genuinely changes how a microphone behaves: a lower setting can tame the top of a ribbon and add body, a higher one opens up a condenser. This is not cosmetics but a second set of colours from the same microphone — and with two channels you can capture both at once and decide at the mix.
