The iQ. Inductor Equalizer is a dual-mono parametric equalizer with inductors in the filter circuits, housed in a rackmount unit with an internal power supply, designed by IGS Audio for recording, mixing, and mastering duties. Four bands – SUB, BASS, MID, and HIGH – cover 28 Hz to 25 kHz with overlapping frequency ranges, allowing two bands to operate simultaneously in the same frequency region. Each band has its own independent bypass switch. A global hard-wire bypass completes the control layout. Inductors in the filter path give the correction a different character from RC-based designs: gain curves are asymmetric and behave similarly to transformer saturation at higher correction values. Q is adjustable from 0.3 to 6. Correction range: ±10 dB per band. Output impedance: 600 Ω, input: 10 kΩ. Maximum output level: +26 dBu. Internal 115/230 V power supply. Power consumption: 25 W.
Inductors instead of capacitors – where the different character comes from
Standard active EQs build their filter sections on RC circuits (resistors and capacitors). The iQ. Inductor Equalizer uses inductors – coils – as the reactive elements in the filter sections. Inductors behave differently from capacitors in the signal path: their phase characteristic, magnetic saturation behaviour, and interaction with the rest of the circuit at higher signal levels all differ from RC equivalents. An inductor can saturate in a way similar to a transformer, introducing subtle harmonic colouration at higher correction values that RC filters do not generate. Simultaneous boosting and cutting at nearby frequencies – a classic tonal shaping technique in analog equalizers – produces asymmetric, non-cancelling curves with a phase signature that digital EQ cannot replicate. Each of the four bands can be bypassed individually without affecting the others.
Four bands with overlapping ranges – for precise and creative work
The SUB band covers 28–300 Hz (shelf), BASS covers 280 Hz – 3 kHz (peak), MID covers 2.2–12.5 kHz (peak), and HIGH covers 8–25 kHz (shelf). The overlapping band boundaries allow complex correction curves combining two bands in the same frequency region with different Q values and different gain amounts – for example, a broad bass boost at Q 0.3 simultaneously with a narrow notch within the same range at Q 6. The dual-mono configuration means each stereo channel has a fully independent four-band equalizer; the unit can work as a stereo processor with matched settings or as two independent mono processors in a single rack unit. Crosstalk: 100 dB. Frequency response: 20 Hz – 20 kHz ±0.1 dB.
