Built around a high-performance feed-forward architecture utilizing the THAT 2180 VCA chip, this module delivers the coveted analog character, punch, and reliability that shaped countless iconic records throughout the 70s and 80s.
From Transparent Leveling to Aggressive Vibe
A common limitation of outboard compressors is their one-dimensional sonic footprint. The Harrison Comp overcomes this bottleneck through a highly versatile control set. At lower ratios (e.g., 2:1) paired with a fast release, the module acts as an ultra-transparent leveler. It smoothly shaves off 2-3 dB of rogue peaks, seating highly dynamic vocals or acoustic guitars perfectly into a dense mix without artifacts. Cranking the ratio and slowing down the release transforms the unit into an aggressive "vibe" compressor, introducing heavy transistor saturation and punch—an ideal secret weapon for crushing drum buses or adding harmonic weight to bass tracks.
Program-Dependent Precision and Groove
Dialing in the perfect static attack time on wildly variable source material can be tedious and often ruins the natural impact of the instrument. Harrison solved this by implementing a program-dependent attack stage. The detector circuit continuously analyzes incoming transients, automatically adapting the VCA's attack speed to optimally suit the source material in real-time. When paired with the continuously variable Release control (spanning from Fast to Slow), this topology allows engineers to quickly dial in the perfect musical movement, ensuring dynamic control without unintentionally crushing the core transients.
