After more than twenty years of requests for a "Distressor in a box," Empirical Labs released Arousor as an evolution rather than an emulation — the same detector circuits were rebuilt component by component, then extended with features that couldn't exist in analog hardware. Twelve compression curves, including two exclusive to the plugin (1.5:1 and 8:1) plus 6.5:1 and 7:1 in ALT mode, give a wider range of character than the physical Distressor's eight ratios.
AtMod and soft clipping instead of the attack/transient trade-off
Every compressor faces the same classic dilemma: a fast attack catches transients but chokes them; a slow attack lets transients through but loses control of peaks. AtMod solves it differently — it slows only the initial slope of the attack envelope, letting a bit more snare crack or bass thump through without giving up the target gain-reduction depth set elsewhere in the unit. The Soft Clipper section merges both distortion modes found on the hardware Distressor into a single knob, adding characteristic vintage second-harmonic content without needing to drive the input level — in practice replacing a separate saturation plugin or exciter. The Expert panel (Rev 3) additionally lets you place the compressor before or after the clipper circuit.
Sidechain EQ and Rivet mode for precise triggering
Two sidechain EQ bands — high-pass and parametric — expand the two fixed detector filters found on the hardware Distressor into a fully adjustable circuit, and Listen mode (Rev 3) lets you hear exactly what's triggering compression before committing to a setting. That keeps heavy bass from needlessly triggering gain reduction across a whole mix, with the threshold reacting selectively to the band that's actually causing the problem. Rivet mode, modeled on the hardware's Nuke ratio, delivers the steepest compression available in the plugin for brutally taming room mics, and light CPU usage means several instances can sit on one bus without worrying about performance.
