Dangerous Music CONVERT-8 — an eight-channel, reference-grade D/A converter for mixing, stem mastering, and monitoring in formats from stereo to 7.1 and Atmos, designed by Chris Muth and Paul Messick.

CONVERT-8 was built from the ground up around a converter chip selected through blind listening tests by the design team and a group of invited engineers, paired with an analog front end and reconstruction filters personally tuned by Chris Muth. Dangerous Music publishes actual measured specifications rather than theoretical numbers copied from a chip manufacturer's datasheet — a difference that shows up directly in what actually comes out of the output jacks.

Switching digital sources without digging through menus

Four digital inputs — USB, AES/SPDIF, ADAT, and optical TOSLINK — switch with a single front-panel button, without touching operating-system audio settings or rerouting drivers. In practice that means instant comparison between a reference player and material coming from the DAW, with no lag and no risk of a routing mistake. Automatic sample-rate detection removes mismatches in the signal chain, and eight signal-present LEDs alongside a three-consecutive-sample-over indicator catch an approaching overload before it becomes audible distortion.

The clock as the foundation of stereo and multichannel imaging

The strong, wide stereo sound characteristic of Dangerous converters doesn't come from any "magic widening circuit" — it comes from genuinely excellent channel separation on the analog side and an exceptionally low-jitter JetPLL clock. Three clock modes — Normal (syncing to whatever digital input is active), External (slaving to an outside word clock), and Master — let CONVERT-8 become the central timing reference for an entire digital rig instead of just passively receiving clock from another device. Integration with the MONITOR-ST/SR remote gives remote access to input selection from the same desktop controller already handling monitoring, without a separate control panel for the converter.
