AEA R44 Series & RCA 44 Cushion Mount — a complete replacement cushion mount assembly for AEA R44C, R44CX, and original RCA 44 microphones, with a straight-knurl top ring available in three finishes: Bright Chrome, Satin Chrome, and Black.

The cushion mount on the RCA 44 is not a simple stand adapter — it is an integrated mechanical isolation system. The rubber cushion decouples the microphone body (over 1.5 kg) from structure-borne vibrations travelling through the stand and boom arm, protecting the low-tuned ribbon element from mechanical modulation that would otherwise register as low-frequency noise on the track. After decades of use, the original rubber hardens and loses its damping properties, and the top ring thread wears to the point where it no longer holds the microphone's rotational position in the yoke. The AEA Cushion Mount restores both parameters to factory specification.

Mechanical Function, Not Just Appearance

Correct cushion mount operation requires vertical orientation relative to the stand — in that position the cushion works in axial compression, the axis for which it was designed. AEA's R44 owner's manual states this explicitly: rotate the microphone within the yoke rather than turning the entire rig on the stand, because rotating the assembly puts the cushion in torsion rather than compression, reducing vibration isolation. A worn original RCA cushion mount with a stripped top ring thread will not hold the set rotational angle — the microphone drifts between takes. A new AEA Cushion Mount eliminates this: the straight-knurl top ring provides firm, tool-free clamping that stays set under the weight of the R44 body. Note: this part is not compatible with the R44CE or R44CXE, which use a single-piece black anodised aluminium mount of different geometry.

Finish Selection by Microphone Variant

Bright Chrome matches early RCA 44B production with the black transformer case — the less common pre-war finish. Satin Chrome is the standard finish on most RCA 44BX units and on the AEA R44C and R44CX, making it the default choice for general service replacements. Black is the functional matte finish for stage and film environments where chrome reflections conflict with camera lighting. Finish selection at ordering should match the microphone's original variant to maintain historical consistency during restoration.

KEY FEATURES

  • Vibration isolation: Decouples the microphone body from stand-borne vibrations — critical protection for the low-tuned ribbon element.
  • Straight-knurl top ring — precise, tool-free clamping of rotational position in the yoke.
  • Three finishes: Bright Chrome (early RCA 44B), Satin Chrome (RCA 44BX / R44C / R44CX standard), Black (stage/film use).
  • Full interchangeability: Direct factory replacement for RCA 44A, 44B, 44BX and AEA R44C, R44CX.
  • Compatibility note: Not compatible with AEA R44CE or R44CXE (different single-piece mount geometry).
