Studio monitors – how to choose the right ones
A studio monitor is the most honest speaker in your room. It shouldn't flatter the bass or sweeten the highs — it should show your mix exactly as it is, so you make the calls, not the speaker. This collection covers monitors for mixing and mastering: from compact nearfields for a home studio to full-range main monitors for a control room.
Active vs passive monitors
Active monitors have the amplifier built in — plug in your interface and go. That's the simplest route for most studios and our default for a home setup. Passive monitors need a separate power amp but give you freedom in large, tuned rooms. Already know what you want? Jump to Active Monitors.
Monitor size vs room size
Start with the size of your room, not the size of the driver. An 8-inch monitor in a small room causes more problems than it solves. For a room under ~15 m² a 5-inch woofer is usually enough; anything bigger won't have space to breathe. Working with low end? Consider adding a studio subwoofer.
