Universal Audio Bock 187 B-Stock is a large-diaphragm cardioid FET condenser microphone, handbuilt at Universal Audio's Custom Shop in Santa Cruz, California. Designed by David Bock — an engineer who spent two decades servicing and calibrating microphones at the world's leading recording studios — the Bock 187 is an interpretation of the classic K67-based condenser design, fitted with a larger transformer and a FAT mode absent from the original. B-Stock units may carry minor traces of use; technical specification is identical to new stock.
Cinemag transformer and FAT mode — where the differences from the original lie
The central departure of the Bock 187 from the designs it draws on is its large Cinemag output transformer in place of the standard unit used in the U87. The larger core translates to higher headroom in the low end and lower distortion under loud sources — precisely where vintage units start to harden up tonally. Minimalist Class-A FET circuitry around a dual-diaphragm, dual-symmetrical backplate K67-type capsule (1", large-diaphragm) delivers the characteristic clear, open sound with a gentle presence lift in the upper midrange. The FAT mode switches the tonal voicing: instead of the slight high-end lift of the standard Norm setting, it activates a boost across 10–400 Hz, substituting for the natural proximity effect when recording at greater distances from the capsule. Useful for vocals tracked from 30 cm or more, and for sources with a thin, upper-register character. The mic is side-address — the UA badge indicates the front, the side to point toward the source.Application and rear-panel switches
Three micro-switches on the rear panel control: –10 dB pad (for loud sources such as drums and guitar amps), 120 Hz low-cut filter (eliminating floor rumble and HVAC noise), and Norm/FAT mode selection. Switching requires a pen tip or small screwdriver and may need the mic repositioned to access. The Bock 187 B-Stock carries the standard manufacturer warranty. Included: premium wooden storage case, stand mount (5/8"-27 thread).KEY FEATURES
