What is a modular synthesizer?

A modular synth isn't one instrument — it's a system you build yourself. Instead of a fixed signal path, you get separate modules — oscillators, filters, envelopes — and you patch them together with cables however you like. Nothing is decided for you. That's the whole appeal, and the whole learning curve, so let's start at the bottom.

Modular vs semi-modular: where to start

New to this? A semi-modular synth is the sane entry point: its modules are already wired internally, so it makes sound out of the box, and you override those connections with patch cables as you learn. A fully modular system is built from scratch — a sound source, something to shape it, something to open and close it — and grows exactly the way you want.
