The TRP2 and TRP3 are two-channel microphone preamplifiers in a half-rack aluminium chassis — designed to be portable and lightweight, equally usable on a studio desk or at a remote session without a rack enclosure. When a TRP moves into a permanent studio installation or a live signal chain, precise rackmounting is required. The Rack Ears Set fills that gap: two ears attach directly to the side panels of the TRP2 or TRP3 with four Phillips screws, converting the half-rack unit into a standard 19-inch rack-mountable device without any modification to the electronics or chassis structure.
Rack Installation Without Specialised Tools
Fitting the ears requires nothing beyond a standard Phillips screwdriver — four screws secure both ears to the TRP2 or TRP3 body, and the unit then fits flush in a standard 19-inch rack in 1U of space. For studios managing a multi-channel ribbon preamp signal path, a fixed rack position eliminates the risk of the unit sliding off a desk, protects XLR and power connections from accidental cable tension, and consolidates signal routing in a single organised location. For two TRP2 or TRP3 units installed side by side in a single rack space, AEA offers the TRP & TDI Duo Rack Tray — the Rack Ears Set applies to single-unit installation only.
Compatibility and Limitations
The ears are designed specifically for the TRP2 and TRP3 chassis dimensions — the original first-generation TRP uses a different enclosure geometry and is not compatible with this set. Owners of the original TRP should verify fit before ordering. AEA does not declare compatibility with half-rack units from other manufacturers; the ears are machined to the specific aluminium chassis of the TRP2 and TRP3.
