Original RCA 44 microphones left the factory with zinc-cast yokes — a material that corrodes, cracks along the edges, and loses dimensional accuracy after decades of use, causing the cushion mount clamp screw to slip in degraded metal. AEA addressed this structurally: the R44 Series Yoke is a bronze casting — harder, more corrosion-resistant, and mechanically more stable than zinc. The geometry is reproduced from RCA's original engineering drawings, giving it full interchangeability across all 44 variants: 44A, 44B, 44BX and their derivatives, as well as the complete AEA R44C, R44CX, R44CE, and R44CXE series.
Restoration Without Material Compromise
The yoke carries the full weight of the microphone — over 1.5 kg in the case of the R44 — and transfers mechanical stress from the stand to the cushion mount. A worn zinc casting from a vintage RCA 44 often no longer holds the tilt angle: the clamp screw rotates in corroded metal and the microphone slowly drifts from the set position during a session. The bronze AEA casting eliminates that failure mode — material hardness maintains clamp engagement and keeps the set angle stable under load, including when the microphone is positioned horizontally. Bright Chrome finish matches the polished chrome aesthetic of the R44C museum-quality versions; Satin Chrome pairs with the R44CE and R44CX satin nickel trim.
Service Part and Bench Stock
AEA has manufactured all parts for the RCA 44 since 1998 and has been servicing this microphone family since the 1970s. The R44 Series Yoke appears in AEA's official service price list as a standard replacement component — the same part AEA installs in microphones leaving their restoration workshop. For technicians and collectors, this provides direct access to a new bronze casting without sourcing from private collections or the secondary market, where original zinc yokes in good condition are increasingly difficult to find.
