AEA 1029 is a two-channel stereo VCA compressor in a half-rack 1U chassis, designed by Fred Forssell. Built around discrete op-amps with a complementary pair of Toshiba NOS JFETs, two THAT 4305 VCA chips, and a single RMS detector fed by the summed input signal, the 1029 operates in a feed-forward topology — delivering transparent, consistent compression without the coloration associated with transformer-coupled or tube-based designs. It is AEA's first compressor, built specifically for stereo microphone pairs and direct integration with the RPQ and TRP preamp series.
Feed-Forward Topology and Three Sensing Modes
Detection from the summed stereo input means both channels receive identical gain reduction decisions — no image shift between L and R, which is the standard failure mode of two independent mono compressors linked after the fact. Three sensing modes address distinct tracking scenarios: Peak Fast (4 ms attack / 17 ms release) hits transients hard and delivers a noticeable squash effect — the right setting for drum overheads when presence and bite are the goal; RMS (12 ms attack / 50 ms release) runs the most transparently, smoothing vocal and acoustic instrument dynamics without audible pumping; Peak Slow (4 ms attack / 200 ms release) holds a long release, letting the compressor breathe in tempo with the material and producing natural-sounding gain riding at higher ratio settings. The front-panel Dry/Wet control enables parallel compression inline — no external splitter or summing bus required.
Signal Control and AEA Chain Integration
Threshold runs continuously from –20 to +20 dBu and ratio from 1:1 to Limit, covering the full range from gentle leveling to brick-wall limiting. Up to 20 dB of makeup gain compensates for level reduction under heavy compression. True bypass via relay switching keeps the circuit fully out of the signal path when the compressor is disengaged — no passive loading on the downstream impedance. Three 7-segment LED ladders display gain reduction (6 segments, 1–12 dB) plus input and output levels in real time. Paired with an RPQ3 or TRP2 preamp, the 1029 completes a stereo signal chain optimized end-to-end for ribbon microphones. The half-rack form factor supports both 19-inch rack mounting with an optional rack tray and desktop use with the included rubber bumpers.
