SOMA Laboratory Lyra-4 Zanzibar Blue – a compact, analog drone synthesizer crafted for experimental musicians and sound designers. As the younger sibling of the renowned Lyra-8, it embraces an “organismic” design philosophy, where modules interact in ways that mimic living organisms, creating dynamic and evolving soundscapes. Its rugged aluminum housing, compact dimensions, and lightweight design (1.2 kg) make it ideal for portable setups, live performances, or studio use. Available in a distinctive Zanzibar Blue finish, the Lyra-4 delivers a unique sonic character suitable for ambient, noise, and drone music genres.
The Lyra-4 features four non-linear tone generators, referred to as “voices,” inspired by vintage electric organ circuits rather than traditional VCOs. These voices are arranged in two pairs (1-2, 3-4), offering flexible tuning for microtonal exploration or classic organ-like tones. The instrument supports both electric organ mode and FM synthesis, where each voice acts as an independent FM operator with envelope-driven modulation intensity. A HYPER LFO, combining two LFOs via summation or multiplication, provides complex modulation patterns, while a MOD DELAY with self-modulation adds depth and atmospheric effects. A built-in distortion stage enhances the raw, visceral character of the sound.
Despite its experimental nature, the Lyra-4 is a professional instrument with balanced output dynamics and frequency response, ready for live performances or studio recordings without additional processing. Its compact size (241 x 203 x 62 mm) and robust design make it perfect for musicians on the move, while CV inputs enable integration with modular setups. The Lyra-4’s unique sound architecture ensures that two units together create a distinct stereo experience, different from a single Lyra-8.
