SOMA Laboratory Flux – an expressive digital synthesizer with a unique magnetic interface that transforms hand gestures into sound in real time. Inspired by the Theremin, Flux introduces a new paradigm of gestural control, using magnetic bows to modulate pitch, timbre, and effects across up to 17 simultaneous parameters. Ideal for performers and composers seeking a highly tactile, intuitive instrument that merges acoustic-style nuance with cutting-edge synthesis.

The interface is split into a long magnetic keyboard on the right and a timbre control section on the left. The performer holds two magnetic bows, each tracked in three spatial axes and tilt orientation, enabling detailed real-time control. The keyboard is tuned in 12-tone equal temperament, with six playable octaves via vertical positioning. Timbre, modulation, effects, and spatial processing are manipulated in the left hand, unlocking powerful expression. Designed with minimal physical controls, Flux offers precision without mechanical parts – ideal for touring, improvisation, and academic experimentation alike.

Flux features multiple DSP-based synthesis engines including virtual analog, FM, physical modeling, bit-mangling and more. Presets (up to 37) are quickly accessible, with instant recall. While the standard mode is monophonic, duophonic and polyphonic operation (up to 12 voices) are available, alongside features like pitch quantization and staccato mode. Expression pedal input and future breakout box support (MIDI MPE and CV) expand the performance potential beyond the standalone unit.
