Mercury Bruder is a two-channel tube microphone preamplifier in a 3U chassis where one channel runs a V72s circuit and the other a V76m. The name is not accidental: these are two brothers from the same German family with distinctly different temperaments.
Two different characters instead of two identical channels
A typical two-channel preamp gives you two identical paths, so a pair of microphones always gets the same colouring. Bruder inverts that: the V72s channel brings a dense, compact midrange, the V76m channel offers more gain reserve and a different handling of the top. On one singer you can compare both sounds in the same session, with the same microphone, by moving a single cable.
A sensible choice for a first tube front end
If you are torn between a V72 and a V76, this unit settles it for you: both paths sit in one chassis and take one rack space. In practice one channel usually stays on vocals while the other covers everything else that passes through the studio.
