Lake People MC10 – Ultra-Compact Monitor Controller with D/A Conversion
The MC10 is the smallest unit in Lake People's monitor controller line, following the rack-mounted MC100 and MC50. It packages a high-resolution D/A converter, a Pre-Gain headphone amplifier, two inputs, and two independently switchable line outputs into an aluminium housing measuring 108 x 41 x 143 mm. Bus-powered via USB-C, it operates without an external power supply – making it equally suited to a space-constrained desktop setup and mobile work on the road. The housing is manufactured in Germany to the same material and build standards applied across Lake People's full product range.
D/A Conversion and Signal Routing
The USB-C digital input handles PCM up to 384 kHz at 32 bits and DSD up to DSD256 – converter specifications that sit squarely in studio-grade territory and are uncommon in a unit this size. An analogue RCA input accommodates a second source, switchable via a front-panel toggle. On the output side, a balanced XLR and an unbalanced RCA output can be activated independently, allowing two pairs of monitors to be connected and switched or used simultaneously without additional routing hardware. Internal DIP switches provide user-adjustable line output levels and headphone gain settings – no software, no menus, no DAW dependency. This keeps the MC10 functional as a standalone monitoring centre independent of any host application.
Pre-Gain Headphone Amplifier and Power
The headphone amplifier uses Lake People's Pre-Gain circuit, which adjusts the amplifier's operating point to match the impedance of the connected headphones. Low-impedance and high-impedance headphones both receive controlled, distortion-free drive without manual gain staging. Two headphone outputs sit on the front panel – a 6.35 mm TRS jack and a 3.5 mm mini-jack – both carrying the same signal and usable simultaneously. Primary power comes from the USB-C connection to the host device; a second USB-C port accepts an external power supply to reduce the load on a laptop or tablet battery during extended sessions. Volume control is handled by an Alps RK27 potentiometer, a component chosen for its precision and longevity under frequent use.
