Coil Audio CA-286 MK2

Coil Audio CA-286 MK2 is a modular tube preamp recreating the European two-stage circuit built around EF86/6267 pentodes, the sound associated with Telefunken, Langevin, Collins, and Gates from the 1950s and 60s. The module mounts in the PS6 rack alongside other CA-series preamps.

European character versus the American CA-70

Where the CA-70 recreates the American 6J7/6C5 topology, the CA-286 goes the EF86 pentode route, a more detailed, richer midrange sound typical of European consoles from that era. A 42-60dB gain range is wider than the CA-70's, giving more headroom on quieter mic sources.

A flexible pad instead of separate inputs

The pad section handles both mic and line level on the same input, so one CA-286 module works equally well tracking a vocal or taking a line-level signal from a synth or console. Custom Coil Audio input and output transformers, combined with transformer-balanced signal handling, build a consistent character across the whole chain.
