The Osmose 61 extends the original 49-key Osmose with an additional octave, bringing the keybed to a full five octaves for two-handed performance and broader harmonic range. It combines Expressive E's patented 3D keybed, MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) protocol support, and the EaganMatrix synthesis engine developed by Haken Audio into a single instrument assembled at Expressive E's own facility in Poland. B-Stock units are fully functional instruments with minor cosmetic imperfections and carry the manufacturer's standard warranty.

3D Keybed and MPE: Per-Note Gestural Control

The Osmose keybed is not a standard keybed with aftertouch added – it is a purpose-built multi-axis mechanism. Each key responds independently across three dimensions: the Z-axis registers strike velocity and sustained press depth; the Y-axis detects lateral movement for vibrato and side-to-side modulation; continued downward pressure after the initial strike triggers pressure glide. Operating under MPE, every individual note receives its own MIDI channel, enabling simultaneous independent pitch bend, modulation, and aftertouch across all 24 voices at once. This allows a player to bend one note while holding others statically, apply vibrato to a single voice mid-phrase, or control timbral shift via sustained pressure on each finger independently – functionality that has no equivalent on conventional keybeds. The expressive arpeggiator applies the same gestural parameters to sequenced patterns.

EaganMatrix Engine and Sound Ecosystem

The EaganMatrix is Haken Audio's modular digital synthesis engine – the same engine powering the Continuum Fingerboard – supporting physical modelling, FM, subtractive synthesis, and hybrid combinations. Every synthesis parameter responds in real time to the keybed's gestural input. The instrument ships with 580 factory presets and accommodates up to 2048 user preset slots. Onboard effects include reverb, delay, compressor/drive, two convolution engines (pre and post reverb/delay), and EQ. Osmose 61 functions as a standalone synthesizer or as an MPE MIDI controller via DIN MIDI in/out/thru and USB for integration with any compatible DAW or hardware. Expressive E's own soft-synth instruments – Soliste (physical modelling strings) and Noisy 2 (dual-layer noise-driven synth) – alongside third-party partnerships with U-he, KiloHearts, Dawesome, AAS, and Synapse Audio provide an expanding sound library ecosystem built specifically for the instrument's expressive capabilities.
