Say „Prism Sound" and you think of the converter that literally redefined how good digital audio could sound. The company's story begins in 1981, when two British electronics engineers, Graham Boswell and Ian Dennis, met while working on digital signal processing (DSP) technology for the legendary Rupert Neve & Company. Together they designed the Neve DSP, the world's first commercial digital mixing console to use DSP. Following that, the pair worked as consultants building a digital commentary and communications switching matrix for the BBC, used to cover the 1992 Barcelona Olympics — and the knowledge gained from that project became the foundation for the company they founded in 1987: Prism Sound. The brand's first converters, the AD-1 and the later AD-124, focused on something almost nobody was paying attention to at the time: dynamic range and clarity at the lowest signal levels. The result was hailed as a breakthrough in digital sound quality and quickly became the new benchmark for mastering facilities remastering catalogs for CD release. By the late 1990s, the company introduced the AD-2/DA-2 converters, capable of sampling up to 96kHz — still the reference converter of choice today for figures like Peter Thomas, founder of PMC. In 2001, Prism Sound also entered multichannel tracking with the ADA-8, offering 16 channels of simultaneous A/D or D/A conversion. The company's commitment to measurement precision (today operating separately as Spectral Measurement) was recognized with the Queen's Award for International Trade in 2011.
