AKG C414 XLII is a versatile condenser microphone with a dual 1-inch diaphragm, with a variable polar pattern (cardioid, hypercardioid, omnidirectional, figure-8, wide cardioid) and an impressive dynamic range of 134 dB. The microphone's self-noise does not exceed 6 dB-A, which is comparable to the level of top professional studio microphones.
The microphone's diaphragm is made of a flexible, high-quality gold-plated foil, which prevents the capsule from sticking even at high sound pressure levels. The capsule is fixed to an anti-vibration mount and protected by a 3 mm metal mesh, which further protects the diaphragm from air currents and harsh sounds like "b" and "p". The C414 XLII model has the ability to switch between several level modes via buttons: -6 dB/-12 dB/-18 dB for very loud sound sources, as well as a built-in high-pass filter with two modes: a 12 dB/octave roll-off at 40 or 80 Hz and a 6 dB/octave roll-off at 160 Hz. The selected mode is illuminated by a green LED.
The microphone is very useful in film production (voice-over, dubbing), as well as in professional recording studios for recording live musical instruments (suitable for strings - violin and cello, acoustic and electric guitar, piano, grand piano in rock and jazz styles, organ, brass and woodwind groups) and vocals (solo vocal parts, speech).
