Waldorf Iridium at a glance

The IRIDIUM keyboard is based on the highly regarded desktop version and is in no way inferior to it in terms of sound. Furthermore, both versions are a modification of the unique QUANTUM synthesiser, which can be considered a milestone in the history of synthesisers. The IRIDIUM modification means that the instrument shines with 16 voices and features outstanding Multimode digital filters. Keyboard instrument fans can look forward to a high-quality 49-key FATAR keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch and velocity. The 16 pads from the desktop version are not available on the keyboard version, but the area on the left side of the keyboard has been significantly enlarged, making it more than deserving of the title 'performance section '. Eight control voltage inputs and outputs on the rear panel allow the IRIDIUM to be controlled by components of a Eurorack modular system or a semi-modular synthesiser.

SynthesisThe heart of the

Iridium are three digital oscillators, each with five selectable synthesis modes:

  • Wavetable: Waldorfstyle with the latest Nave technology, including speech synthesis and generation of Wavetables from external sound sources
  • Waveform: Waveform with up to 8 simultaneous waveforms per oscillator in detuned or chordal mode with hard sync, warp, PWM, and pitchable noise
  • Particle: granular sampler with multiple and traditional sampling
  • Resonator: exciter with multi-sampling and filter bank modelling
  • Kernel: a precisely constructed tool for creating futuristic, experimental sounds and FM-like sounds

The oscillators themselves do amazing things and offer a huge range of different sounds. Since there are even more parameters under the bonnet, which can also be modulated at different times, creating new sounds is likely to be an ongoing process in the best sense of the word. The filter in the Iridium is an excellent dual Multimode filter of digital origin, which covers a wide spectrum of resonant and attenuated sounds. Completing the extensive signal chain are five simultaneously available effects such as delay, reverb, chorus, Flanger or Phaser and a Master compressor.

ModulationWith

six looped envelopes and LFOs and a Complex Modulator, which is a combination of two LFOs with self-drawn(!) waveforms and envelopes, in addition to the usual modulation sources such as. Velocity or Aftertouch, you have enough options at your disposal to fill the 40-position modulation matrix and thus breathe life into the sound at almost any time.

Access

The high-resolution multi-touch display allows convenient access to every parameter and visually realises every movement on the control panel. It displays, with captivating precision, real-time changes in sound at different stages of the synthesis process. It is the same size as the Quantum's display, and is surrounded by the same set of knobs and buttons.

Sequencer, arpeggiator, chords and macros

On the left side of the keyboard is the so-called performance section - in addition to tried-and-tested standards such as octave selection, two knobs for Pitchbend and modulation, and a hold (latch) button, there are several direct accesses here. Mono switches between monophonic and polyphonic playing for the current pattern. Chord allows you to create a chord. Seq/Arp takes you directly to the corresponding menu page on the touchscreen, and switches between sequencer and arpeggiator when pressed again. The six self-defining macros are very helpful when using the IRIDIUM keyboard, as you can define for yourself which function you want to switch to most quickly and which action to perform. For example, you can go directly to the recording area in the sequencer or turn the Glide function on/off.
