Soma 's Rumble or Ancient Times is a handy mini synthesiser with plenty of lo-fi charm and sounds from the days when programs still fit on floppy disks. The 8-bit synthesiser generates a wide range of sounds you may be familiar with from MS-DOS and C64 video games, lots of noisy stuff, but also more typical synth sounds that lend themselves to a musical context. Thanks to its efficient code, 'ROAT' needs almost no resources and can cope with a processor that has historically been used in fridges or microwave ovens. Therefore, four AAA batteries are sufficient for 130 hours of operation.
The sound generation consists of four tunable oscillators with 16 waveforms each, which have their own LFOs and envelopes. On top of this, there are eight summing algorithms that cope with FM, ring modulation, multiplication and XOR, among others, and cover a total of 1536 variations. A deliberately cheesy 8-bit lowpass filter completes the sound. For greater sonic variety, a randomiser is implemented.
!Animate and rhythmise bizarre sounds with the integrated sequencer, which continuously loops 4/4 rhythm and plays back preset sound triggers, and can also delete them again. In addition, the sequencer can be synchronised via an analogue clock with, for example, the Teenage Engenieering Pocket Operator.
