Soma Laboratory 's Pulsar-23 Orange is a patchable analogue drum synth with a loop recorder and a very direct sound. The four tracks (voices) of the Pulsar-23 are divided into bass drum, bass, snare and hi-hat and are individually parameterised. Overall, the instrument has a very organic sound that is also very direct, not to say massive. Depending on the combination with other tracks and parameters, it is also possible to create noisy sounds, sounds from the metal industry, but also FM sounds. For modulation, there is a variable LFO with a frequency range of 0.1 to 5,000 hertz, four percussion-like envelopes, a random generator, two inverters, an additional VCA and, not forgetting the numerous patch points and inputs that could fire up a Eurorack modular system. The sound is rounded

off with

an analogue distortion and digitally implemented delay and reverb effects.

Intuitively playableInstead of

the chaser programming typical of drum machines, the Pulsar-23 is played via loop recorders, one of which is per track. The four loop recorders are oriented to the internal clock generator, which also has divider values, and to the incoming MIDI clock. In addition, four voices can be addressed via the MIDI interface, various CC commands are available as patch points.

As versatile as a modular systemMore than

100 patch points distribute control voltages, gates, audio and clock signals to any signal inside or even outside the Pulsar-23.All patch connections are made via crocodile terminals, which has the advantage that many connections can be made in a small space. For the integration of external devices, such as a modular system, there are eight bi-directional connectors for 3.5 mm jacks on the front and a further six bi-directional connectors for 6.3 mm jacks on the rear.

The

large jack sockets can be used as individual outputs for connection to a mixing console.
