Neumann U 87 Ai is arguably the most famous and widely used microphone in the Neumann lineup. It features a large dual-diaphragm capsule that provides three selectable polar patterns — omnidirectional, cardioid, and figure-8 — switched via a selector located beneath the protective grille.
On the rear of the body, there is a -10 dB pad switch that allows the microphone to handle sound pressure levels up to 127 dB SPL without distortion. Additionally, a low-cut filter reduces low-frequency response to compensate for proximity effect and suppress unwanted rumble or subsonic noise.
The front side of the U 87 Ai is marked with the Neumann diamond logo. In cardioid and figure-8 modes, the microphone maintains a flat, even response across the upper frequency range, even when positioned close to the source, ensuring a natural and smooth sound. Thanks to its switchable low-frequency roll-off, the U 87 Ai effectively eliminates low-end interference and preserves tonal balance.
The dual-diaphragm capsule is elastically mounted to minimize structure-borne noise and is protected by a robust metal grille. The pattern selector allows quick switching between the three directional characteristics, indicated by symbols above the slot.
The microphone’s design follows a classic pressure-gradient transducer principle, offering legendary versatility. Whether used as a main or secondary microphone, the U 87 Ai delivers consistent performance across nearly all studio applications, from vocals to instruments and orchestral recording.
