LEWITT MTP 840 DM is a dynamic moving-coil microphone with a supercardioid polar pattern and a switchable phantom-powered active amplifier stage. The flagship dynamic in LEWITT's MTP stage series – and one of the very few dynamic microphones on the market to combine a moving-coil capsule with low-noise active electronics.
Active Mode – Dynamic Body, Condenser Detail
In passive mode the MTP 840 DM operates as a conventional dynamic: sensitivity of 3.5 mV/Pa, 135 dB dynamic range, no dependency on phantom power. Switching to active mode (48V phantom, 5.5 mA draw) engages the onboard low-noise amplifier, boosting sensitivity by +6 or +12 dB while keeping output impedance low. In active mode self-noise drops to 19 dB(A) and the tonal character shifts noticeably toward a condenser – fuller low end, more natural transient response, less aggressive presence peak. For an FOH engineer this translates directly to less corrective EQ on the vocal channel and more headroom in a dense mix. All switches – gain and low-cut – are recessed under the grille and marked by status LEDs that can be switched off, keeping settings readable in the dark without interfering with the performance.
Supercardioid Pattern and Filtering for Demanding Stages
The supercardioid pickup pattern delivers higher gain before feedback and tighter side rejection than a standard cardioid – relevant whenever stage monitors are placed close and loud. The pattern remains consistent across the entire frequency range, which is uncommon in dynamic stage mics and directly means rear rejection doesn't collapse at lower frequencies. The two-position low-cut filter (150 Hz or 250 Hz, 12 dB/oct slope) lets you control proximity effect and structure-borne noise without touching the console EQ. The capsule sits on an internal elastic suspension that minimises handling noise transmitted through the body. The structure-in-structure housing combines a zinc die-cast outer body with a nylon-reinforced ABS inner frame – built for daily touring without mechanical compromises.
