Torso Electronics S4 – granular sampler and real-time audio processor in desktop format, built for sound designers, experimental producers, and live performers who need a standalone instrument for transforming sound without a computer. Four parallel stereo tracks, each running a five-stage signal chain – Material, Granular, Filter, Color, Space – cover everything from tape-style looping and polyphonic sample playback to dense granular textures and destructive processing. OS 2.0 added macro controls, scenes, varispeed recording, Disc playback, and envelope follower modulation, making the S4 a substantially more complete performance instrument than at launch.
Granular Engine and Signal Chain Depth
The Granular module runs a 4-second audio buffer with up to 128 simultaneous grains, with independent control over size, distribution, contour, and pitch per grain. That's enough resolution to move from subtle pitch smearing to full spectral destruction within a single parameter sweep. Downstream sits a 48-band morphing resonator filter bank covering classic LP/BP/HP characteristics and animated tonal shifts, followed by the Color block – dual-band distortion, bit crusher, compressor, and noise generator – and Space, a stereo reverb/delay with freeze and multiple delay algorithms. Each track runs four independent modulators: LFO, random, ADSR, and envelope follower, each assignable to any parameter with unlimited mapping destinations.
Live Performance and Studio Integration
The PERFORM page maps any combination of parameters to 8 macro knobs and 4 punch-in FX buttons, enabling expressive, gestural control over the full processing chain on stage. Up to 128 Scenes store complete machine states – parameters and sample snapshots – recallable on-device or via MIDI Program Change. Temp mode saves the current state, allows drastic real-time changes, and snaps back instantly on release. Connectivity covers 6.3 mm line I/O, 3.5 mm TRS MIDI in/out, analog sync I/O, USB-C class-compliant audio interface for macOS and Windows, and Wi-Fi with Ableton Link support for wireless integration with other instruments and iOS devices.
