What subtractive synthesis actually is
Start with too much sound, then take away. That is subtractive synthesis in five words. A raw oscillator waveform, like a sawtooth, is packed with harmonics, the extra tones stacked above the note you played. On its own it sounds harsh and buzzy, the audio equivalent of every light in the house switched on at once. The filter walks through and turns most of them off, leaving the character you actually wanted.
