Expressive E Osmose 49 — a synthesizer with a keybed found nowhere else
Expressive E Osmose is a 49-key polyphonic digital synthesizer with the patented A.K.A. (Augmented Keyboard Action) 3D keybed. It lets you shape sound inside every note — dynamics, vibrato, timbral shift — independently on each key simultaneously. Runs as a standalone synthesizer, MPE controller, or classic MIDI controller.
Overview
On a standard keyboard, a note is a binary event: press, sound, decay. What happens inside the note — dynamic movement, vibrato, crossfading between layers — depends entirely on LFOs and envelopes, not your fingers. Osmose 49 changes that relationship at its root.
Each of the 49 keys responds across three simultaneous axes: vertical pressure (velocity and aftertouch), post-threshold press (pressure glide, layer crossfading), and lateral movement (per-note vibrato and pitch bend without the pitch wheel). Every note in a chord carries its own isolated expression channel — not a global aftertouch signal, but full MPE per finger.
The instrument fits into setups of film composers, game and cinematic audio designers, and electronic producers who need sounds with internal motion and dynamics that an LFO alone cannot produce.
Key Features
- Augmented Keyboard Action (A.K.A.)
Patented keybed mechanism with raised key stems, developed exclusively for Osmose. Sound is generated from the first touch — before the note officially triggers — with no dead zones and no thresholds. No other keyboard synthesizer uses the same mechanism.
- EaganMatrix sound engine by Haken Audio
The same DSP engine powering the Haken Continuum, a reference instrument in expressive synthesis. Physical modelling, FM, subtractive, additive, granular — all within one multi-layered environment. Six dedicated SHARC DSP chips, up to 24 voices of polyphony.
- Full per-note MPE on every key
Pitch bend, aftertouch, pressure glide, and vibrato are fully independent for each note in a chord. Osmose operates in three modes — standalone synth, MPE controller, or classic MIDI controller — switchable without rebuilding the setup.
- 500+ factory presets with macro controls
Every preset is hand-tuned for the A.K.A. keybed with pre-mapped macros for fast editing of timbre, texture, and effects. The library covers physically modelled winds and strings, FM, pads, basses with the dynamics of a bass guitar, and SFX for sound design.
- Built-in FX chain
Reverb, delay, compressor/drive, two convolution engines, pre- and post-reverb/delay processing, shelving EQ — ready without an external processor.
- Haken Editor (Mac/PC)
Advanced environment for building sounds from scratch, beyond what is accessible directly from the instrument panel. For sound designers who want to go deeper than factory presets.
USP: A.K.A. — a key as an instrument, not a switch
Standard aftertouch is global — press keys down, the instrument sends one expression signal for the entire keyboard. Polyphonic aftertouch, found in higher-end instruments, gives per-note channels but still requires crossing a pressure threshold before expression activates.
A.K.A. works differently. Sound starts at the first point of key contact — before the note triggers. Each key streams its full range of motion as continuous data, not threshold values. Additionally, each key moves horizontally, giving per-note vibrato or pitch bend without touching the mod wheel.
In practice: string patches enter vibrato exactly as a live player would, because it depends on your finger's motion, not on an LFO curve. A bass responds like a bass guitar — pressure shifts dynamics and tone inside the note. Pads and leads carry breath and movement that no automated modulator can fully replicate.
