United Studio Technologies UT Vintage87 is a large-diaphragm, side-address condenser microphone, a streamlined version of the UT Twin87. It keeps the same component selection and build quality while simplifying operation to a single, fixed true-cardioid pattern. At its heart is the in-house UT-K87 capsule with a dual diaphragm of 6-micron Japanese PET film finished in 24-karat gold, assembled in a clean-room, paired with a large-core, hand-wound output transformer made in the USA.
Classic 87 character without compromise
United deliberately removed the pattern-select circuitry of the original, yielding a hotter, cleaner and more immediate true-cardioid signal with improved signal-to-noise performance. The result is a microphone that sounds like a finished record from the first take on vocals, acoustic instruments, voiceover or broadcast. There is no pattern guesswork, which cuts session setup time to a minimum.
High headroom and a clean signal path
The UT transformer carries nearly four times the metal mass of typical 87-style designs, built with all-nickel laminations. Nothing is lost along the way even over long cable runs, and low frequencies are reproduced fully and reliably with an open, three-dimensional sound. A switchable output filter blocks RF and electromagnetic interference, which matters with wireless mics and in studios full of digital gear. A -10 dB pad and an 80 Hz high-pass filter clean up the signal right at the capsule stage.
