The 013 FET Black is a solid-state small-diaphragm condenser microphone built around the custom S13 capsule with a 25mm gold-sputtered diaphragm and a proprietary Soyuz toroidal transformer - unlike the transformerless 011 FET, the 013 FET's signal path is transformer-coupled, giving it a different, denser character. The matte black finish cuts down on light reflections on stage and on camera, as an alternative to Soyuz's classic cream-and-brass look.
Transformer density without losing small-diaphragm speed
Small-diaphragm mics are prized for fast transient response, but many transformerless designs sound thin in the low end and midrange as a result. The 013 FET pairs the S13 capsule's fast response with the density and warmth of its proprietary toroidal transformer, so recordings of acoustic guitar, piano, or drum overheads keep detail without sounding thin or sterile. Engineers get a fuller front-of-signal character than typical transformerless pencil mics in this class.
One body, several polar patterns
A fixed cardioid pattern limits technique choice - stereo XY or ORTF means switching to a different mic if a session calls for omnidirectional or hypercardioid pickup. The 013 FET's swappable capsule solves that without buying a second microphone: the same body runs cardioid, hypercardioid, or omnidirectional, so one unit covers more scenarios, from a single spot mic to spatial recording with an additional capsule.
