The Drive is Empress Effects' first dedicated overdrive pedal – built around one core idea: shaping the character of gain before the clipping stage, not after it. The circuit originated from combining the discontinued Germ Drive with elements of the Heavy Menace circuit, then iteratively refined through clipping options and EQ placement. The result is an asymmetric hard-clipping overdrive that cleans up by reducing picking dynamics or guitar volume, preserving the natural behaviour of a driven tube amplifier. Gain range: 6–40 dB. Boost: +30 dB (pre or post overdrive). Input impedance: 1 MΩ. Output impedance: 100 Ω. THD+N (buffered bypass): below 0.1%. Frequency response: 20 Hz – 22 kHz (–3 dB). Power: 9 V DC, 250 mA. Dimensions: 122×66×64 mm.
Pre-drive EQ and parallel blend – how this changes overdrive character
In a standard overdrive the equalizer operates after the distortion stage – it shapes what has already been clipped. In the Empress Drive the sweepable midrange control (200 Hz – 2.5 kHz) and the active 3-band EQ (Bass, Mid, Treble, each ±15 dB) sit before the clipping stage: changing the mid setting changes which frequencies push the circuit into saturation, which changes the harmonic character and dynamic behaviour of the resulting overdrive. Boosting lower mids produces thicker, denser breakup; emphasising upper mids adds bite and articulation during palm muting; pulling the mids back tightens the response and reduces harmonic density. The Mix control (Parallel Blend) preserves the dry signal blended with the driven signal – a tool typical of studio processors and rarely found in overdrive pedals, particularly useful for bass players or at high gain settings where low-end definition needs to be retained.
Pre/post routable boost, adaptive gate and VU meter
The boost (+30 dB) operates as an independent footswitch and can be assigned before the overdrive stage (more saturation and compression) or after it (more volume without changing distortion character). Default assignment is pre-overdrive. The VU meter with LED backlight shows in real time how hard the signal is driving the clipping stage – a colour change on the indicator signals which boost mode (pre or post) is active. The adaptive gate monitors the input signal and adjusts its threshold dynamically: it stays open during quieter passages and long sustained notes, and closes quickly during fast stops. Buffered bypass protects signal integrity over long cable runs. Battery operation is not supported.
