The R88 MkII has a built-in shock suspension system, but a direct stand mount without a swivel limits it to a single vertical axis — and the R88 is a microphone that routinely ends up over a drum kit, above a grand piano, hanging dead-hang on a boom in a church, or flying on a film crane. The R88 Series Swivel solves the angle problem: serrated teeth between the two halves of the adapter hold the set position under the full weight of the microphone — approximately 2.6 kg including cable — without drift, and the full angular range lets the engineer aim the R88 straight down, horizontal, or at any intermediate angle without risk of creep under load.
Dead-Hang and Overhead Positions Without Compromise
The R88 MkII is explicitly designed for overhead and dead-hang use — a configuration that cannot be safely executed without an angle-locking adapter. The swivel fits between the stand clamp and the microphone mount, allowing rotation in the vertical plane and locking at the selected position. The serrated lock requires no tools: rotate to the desired angle, tighten the lock screw, and the adapter holds the R88 through an entire session — including on a boom arm extended over a string section or a drum kit. Outside the R88, the swivel is compatible with every AEA microphone carrying a standard 5/8" thread, making it a universal positioning tool across the lineup.
Stereo Image Control Through Angle
The R88 captures stereo in a fixed Blumlein configuration — the angle of the microphone relative to the source directly affects channel balance and stereo width. The swivel enables precise tilt adjustment without repositioning the entire stand. Rotating the R88 45° relative to the front of the ensemble switches the capture technique from Blumlein to M-S instantly — an operation the swivel makes possible in seconds. The serrated lock prevents the angle from shifting between takes, which matters when channel balance and stereo width need to be identical from the first pass to the last.
