AEA NUVO Series Stereo Coupler — a dedicated head-to-head adapter for mounting two AEA N22 or N8 microphones in Blumlein and Mid-Side configurations, locking both microphones in a precise coincident position on a single stand with zero inter-capsule phase offset at a centred source.
The defining technical requirement of the Blumlein technique is that both microphone capsules occupy the same point in space on the same vertical axis — any horizontal or vertical offset between capsule positions introduces phase asymmetry and stereo image skew at the centre. The NUVO Blumlein Coupler achieves this mechanically: it connects two N22 or N8 microphones top-to-top, holding both capsules at the same spatial point with a 90° angle between their axes. Once fitted, the coupler locks both microphones in that relationship — the geometry does not shift when the rig is moved, when the stand position is adjusted, or when cables are managed.
Blumlein and Mid-Side — Two Techniques, One Adapter
The coupler covers both principal coincident stereo techniques using figure-eight microphones. In Blumlein configuration, both N22 or N8 microphones are set at 90° at a shared capsule point — left and right channels captured through the front and rear lobes of the figure-eight patterns. Rotating one microphone 45° on the vertical axis reconfigures the pair as Mid-Side: one microphone facing the source (Mid), the other oriented sideways (Side) — with the same coupler geometry and full stereo width control at the mixer. The NUVO Coupler is standard in the NUVO Stereo Kit and is available separately as a standalone accessory.
Positional Stability as a Repeatability Requirement
Two separate microphone clips on a stereo bar never reliably reproduce the same coincident geometry as a dedicated coupler — even with careful placement, a few millimetres of capsule offset are audible in the stereo image at close miking distances. The NUVO Coupler removes that variable: both microphones are mechanically locked in a fixed spatial relationship and hold that geometry throughout a session regardless of how many times the rig is repositioned.
