The KU5A already has the most extensive internal ribbon protection in the AEA lineup — a multi-layer system of fabric and foam between the outer grille and the 1.8-µm aluminium foil. Even so, a vocalist recording at very close range or a microphone exposed at an open-air festival can generate air blasts that exceed what the built-in protection is designed to handle. The KU5A Windscreen adds an external foam layer engineered for acoustic transparency: modelled to leave the microphone's tonal character and supercardioid polar pattern intact while providing effective mechanical shielding against plosives and wind.
Pop Filter Replacement Without Sonic Trade-Offs
A standard pop filter on a separate stand between a vocalist and a microphone reduces effective working distance, restricts movement, and requires additional rigging. The KU5A Windscreen slips directly over the microphone body and lets a vocalist sing inches from the grille without risk of ribbon damage from air bursts. The KU5A's built-in high-pass filter — activated by the external push-button switch at 6 dB/oct, 283 Hz — manages proximity effect; the windscreen manages air blasts. Together they form a complete close-range vocal system. For touring acts using the KU5A on stage, the windscreen removes the remaining weather risk at outdoor festival appearances.
Acoustic Transparency as a Design Requirement
A windscreen for a ribbon microphone must be engineered differently from one for a condenser — uneven high-frequency attenuation through foam audibly disrupts the KU5A's characteristic response.
